Effect of three commercially available fibre products on human gut microbiota in vitro

In this experiment we examined the effects of three commercially available fibre products: NutriKane™ (sugarcane-derived), Benefiber® (wheat dextrin) and psyllium husk on human gut microbiotas using an in vitro anaerobic gut-mimicking system. For this work each product underwent a multi-step in vitro digestion prior to addition to an anaerobic gut-mimicking medium inoculated with fecal samples. Replicate experiments were performed using samples from six healthy volunteers. Samples collected at different time points were used for taxonomic and metabolite analyses of gut bacteria through 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing (Illumina MiSeq) and quantification of Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs) respectively.
