Maps underlying the publication: Mapping Randstad Holland revisited

<strong>Dataset description</strong>This dataset contains the maps created for <em>OverHolland</em>23, accompanying the contribution 'Mapping Randstad Holland revisited' (2025). <em>OverHolland – Architectural Studies for the Dutch City</em> is a publication series issued by the Koninklijke Nederlandse Oudheidkundige Bond (KNOB) on behalf of the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft.<br>DOI of the publication: 10.47982/overholland.2025.23.257 The maps are made available as an open-access set of high-resolution (HR) maps, complementing the previously published journal article. Publishing the maps as a separate dataset facilitates reuse by students, researchers, and other interested parties. The individual maps can serve as a basis for further studies, be georeferenced for GIS applications, and support comparative analyses with other geographical datasets. This publication also promotes data interoperability and accessibility, as the maps can now be more easily integrated into digital working environments and research projects. <br>Open sharing of the maps encourages transparency, reproducibility, and interdisciplinarity in research and facilitates their use in education, policy development, and heritage management.<br><strong>Research context</strong>The maps in this dataset build on previously published map series developed within the research project <em>Randstad in kaart</em> (Mapping the Randstad), which aims to provide an overview of the urbanization of the contemporary Randstad area. Specifically, the dataset builds on:<br>the maps published in 'Atlas Randstad Holland' (2005), <em>OverHolland</em>2 (https://doi.org/10.7480/overholland.2005.2.2460), which include a composite map (the so-called schillenkaart) showing successive expansions of the built-up area for the reference years 1850, 1910, 1940, 1970, and 2000; andthe map series published in 'Twelve centuries of spatial transformation in the western Netherlands in six map images' (2017), <em>OverHolland</em>10 (https://doi.org/10.7480/overholland.2011.10/11.1653), which depicts the spatial development of the landscape through a sequence of maps. The maps in the present dataset extend both series by adding a new reference year, updating the maps from 2000 to 2020. The accompanying article in <em>OverHolland</em>23 discusses in detail the analytical methods and design principles used, the source material, the methodological choices made, and the process through which the new maps were produced. <br><strong>Dataset contents</strong>This dataset contains eight PDF files: four maps and four accompanying legends.
