Total tobacco tax income in Japan FY 2012-2021

In fiscal 2021, the total tax revenue from the sales of tobacco products in Japan amounted to just over two trillion Japanese yen, reversing the downward trend of the recent years.Tobacco products sold in Japan are subjected to four types of taxes, including consumption taxes, national excise taxes, local excise taxes, and tobacco special taxes. Consequently, taxes account for the majority of retail prices of tobacco products distributed on the domestic market.
