VPRS 16936 Inward Correspondence (circa 1855-1915); Inward Correspondece Files (1915-? 1970)

This series comprises correspondence received by the Bendigo Council relating to all functions undertaken. Later files also contain copies of letters sent. Contents refer to most aspects of the Council's operations.Very little correspondence is extant for the period 1855-1869 constituting a total of one box.Each individual item received by the Council was registered when received and placed within a bundle. Bundles were of two types - chronological (originally one bundle per calendar month although those up to 1899 have been divided into fortnightly bundles) and subject bundles.This method ceased during 1915 in favour of a subject filing system. Items continued to be received as previously but were no longer folded and were placed in file covers which was then titled. File numbers were not allocated.
