Toxin-mediated downregulation of absorptive ion transporters NHE3, DRA, and SGLT1 in the colon contributes to diarrhea associated with Clostridioides difficile infection.

We defined global differences in transcriptome profiles between mice inoculated with toxin mutant strains of Clostridioides difficile. These data were mined to study differences in expression of ion transporters that may be implicated in diarrhea during disease. Overall design: The distal colon, defined as the final third of the mouse colon, was excised from euthanized mice two days post-inoculation with vehicle control (PBS) or mutant and wildtype C. difficile strains. Three biological replicates for each strain or control treatment were used to test differences in expression.
