INTERCULTURAL AWARENESS THROUGH DYSTOPIAN FICTION IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING

In modern English language teaching, developing students’ intercultural awareness has become as important as improving their linguistic competence. Literature plays a significant role in this process because literary texts introduce learners to different cultures, beliefs, values, and social systems. Among various literary genres, dystopian fiction is especially effective in promoting intercultural understanding due to its critical representation of society, identity, inequality, and human relationships. This article explores how dystopian fiction can enhance intercultural awareness in English language teaching. It discusses the educational value of dystopian literature, its influence on learners’ critical thinking, and the role of teachers in integrating such texts into language classrooms. Furthermore, the article analyzes how dystopian narratives encourage students to compare cultures, question social norms, and develop empathy toward different perspectives.
