3D Model of Xeroderma pigmentosum Inv.-Nr.: MMH 08213
Date: 1889
Author/creator: Heinrich Kasten
Provenance: Berlin
Institution: Privatklinik für Dermatologie und Syphilis, Dr. Oscar Lassar
Provider: Medizinhistorisches Museum Hamburg
Branch (field): Dermatology Wax moulage Skin-and venereal diseases Visual appearance and fixation of the wax moulage
Black painted wooden board, light linen cloth and metall pins to interconnect those parts to fix the wax moulage.
The wax moulage consists of varying skin color tones and appears slightly shiny on the surface. The wax scatters the light slightly under the surface. The areas affected by the disease Xeroderma Pigmentosum are mostly red and some are coupled with white coloring which also appear frayed out on the most affected areas. Wax moulages are lifelike replicas of body parts showing pathological patterns. These models, mainly used in dermatology between 1850 and 1950, were usually cast over a plaster or silicone negative from real patients. The moulage artists usually kept secret their specific wax mixtures. This 3D scan was made possible within the framework of the Hamburg Open Science programme by funding from the Ministry of Science, Research and Equality of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
