The human gastrointestinal microbiota is comprised of over 1000 species of bacteria however, less than 40% of these have been cultured. These bacteria are essential for health, aiding digestion, immunity and providing a defensive barrier to potential pathogens. They are dominated by two phyla, the Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. Using advanced anaerobic culturing methods, bacteria isolated from a variety of faecal samples will be sequenced to produce a reference library of genomes showing their diversity.
