VPRS 18037 Film Reels

This series consists of film reels managed by the Film Section of the Country Roads Board (CRB).In 1946, the CRB started producing films to record the progress made with the more important projects, and to illustrate features of design in progressive stages of works, particularly bridge structures.Over many decades, the CRB Film Section produced a number of projects ranging from documentaries to technical engineering films which were created for CRB staff and engineers, public information purposes, technical conferences and training courses.In 1947 the Board set up a Mobile Film Unit which screened the films at CRB camps in areas remote from towns. With the development of television transmitters in many of the larger cities in rural areas, the need for the service provided by the mobile film unit largely disappeared. It was therefore discontinued at the end of 1963.The films produced by the Film Section of CRB proved of great educational value to the Board's technical staff, municipal engineers, and the public and formed a permanent record of developments in methods associated with road construction in Victoria.The number of film reels in this collection represent only a small sample of what was produced by the Film Section. CRB Annual Reports from the 1950s to 1970s indicate the Section produced up to 5 films per financial year.
