Microbial communities in marine oxygen deficient zones (ODZs) are collectively responsible for up to half of marine N loss through conversion of nutrient forms of N to N2O and N2. These processes are carried out by a diverse assemblage of heterotrophic and autotrophic microbes. This project seeks to understand the genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships of microbes in the ETNP ODZ that are responsible for biogeochemical cycling.
