Dataset "Seasonal Data on Beach Litter from a Massive Music Festival in Portugal (2019–2023)"

This dataset was created to address the growing need for understanding spatial and temporal trends in beach litter linked to the RFM SOMNII Music Festival, one of Europe’s largest beach music events. Sampling followed a stratified design across three festival zones - VIP, STAGE, and CHILLOUT - and was conducted seasonally from 2019 to 2023. Using a modified OSPAR methodology, the dataset captures comprehensive litter counts. The cancellation of festival editions during the COVID-19 pandemic provided a unique opportunity to gather baseline data during non-festival periods, adding valuable context to the dataset. Across 17 field campaigns, beach litter was systematically identified, sorted, and classified into 112 OSPAR-defined types. Additional categorization was performed based on material composition, presumed sources, and whether items were targeted by policies such as the EU SUP Directive. The dataset is available in raw and processed formats, enabling detailed analyses of spatial, temporal, and source-based trends. It offers significant potential for reuse, serving as a vital resource for researchers, educators, and policymakers. It supports the study of beach litter patterns, the replication of existing methodologies, and the development of innovative approaches to environmental research.
