Performance of Kokoro (sometimes misspelled as Kokora) Dance at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Gardens in San Francisco on August 16, 1998. Performance followed by panel discussion with the performance's three dancers., Kokoro Dance is a Vancouver-based post-butoh company, formed in 1986 by Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi. It takes its name from the Japanese word Kokoro- meaning heart, soul, and spirit. Kokoro Dance creates deeply evocative and provocative performances. Inspired by Butoh, but with a background in western modern dance training Kokoro fuses the aesthetic of East and West.
