The rhizosphere microbiome is known to impact plant health, growth, and productivity. Different drivers shaping these microbial communities were found in previous studies. Investigating community structure of prokaryotes, Cercozoa and fungi at different depths, in two different soil types (sand, loam) and at a maize mutant lacking root hairs, this study provides more insights into the complex dynamics in the rhizosphere. Further, enzyme activity of acid phosphatase, beta glucosidase and chitinase was linked to microbial community structure.
