资源简介:
This data set contains the faunal data recovered by 1/16 inch waterscreening during the 1980 excavations conducted at Modoc Rock Shelter (11R5). Modoc Rock Shelter is in the central Mississippi River valley in Randolph County, Illinois. The site is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Historic Landmark. Excavation was conducted by Bonnie Styles, Melvin Fowler, and Steven Ahler under the auspices of the Illinois State Museum and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Funding was provided by a grant from the Department of Interior (Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service). Only 1/4 subsamples of the 1/16 inch waterscreen samples were analyzed. The 1/4 subsamples were divided from the whole samples using a geological riffle splitter. Faunal identifications were made by Bonnie Styles and James R. Purdue. Bonnie identified the fish remains and James R. Purdue identified by the mammal remains. Identifications of fish and mammals were made to the most precise level possible using the Osteological Comparative Collections of the Illinois State Museum. Given financial and temporal constraints, remains of other classes of animals were generally only classified into the following categories: turtles, other reptiles, amphibians, birds, indeterminate vertebrates, pelecypoda (freshwater mussels), decapoda (crayfish) and coleoptera (beetles).
