Museums Victoria Entomology and Arachnology Collection

Primarily focused on the fauna of Victoria and south-eastern Australia, the insect and arachnid collections also contain material from around Australia and the rest of the world. It is estimated to contain between 2.5 and 3 million individual specimens, including more than 4,500 holotypes and 19,000 paratypes. The arachnological component is estimated at around 70,000 specimen lots, including over 1600 types.

Significant historical additions have been made from large expeditions such as the 1894 Horn scientific expedition to Central Australia (an area resurveyed by the museum in 1994–2000) as well as several Antarctic and subantarctic expeditions.
