The model brown alga Ectocarpus siliculosus (Phaeophyceae, Stramenopila) has been infected by the phytomyxid parasite Maullinia ectocarpii (Phytomyxea, Rhizaria), aiming at investigating: 1) the immune response of brown algae, 2) the evolution of phytomyxids and 3) their interactions with the host.
