Report on Field Investigations at the Proposed Location for Construction of a Pedestrian Train at Devils Well Cave Spring & Return, Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Shannon County, Missouri

James E. Price, OZAR Archeologist, was requested to assess the potential impact on cultural resources of the construction of a pedestrian trail at Devil's Well by Martha Ruhe who was in charge of establishing a route for the trail from Devil's Well southward down Parker Hollow across Pioneer Forest land which is under private ownership. The project involves construction of a trail originating on the north side of Devil's Well and progressing in an arch westward, then southward around the ravine above the well. Then it progresses southward/southeastward where it enters land owned by Pioneer Forest. Figure I illustrates the location of the project area and the proposed trail route. The trail continues down Parker Hollow to the Current River where it proceeds upstream on the bluff face until it reaches Cave Spring. From cave spring it goes southwest and then loops westward and then northward where it climbs a steep hill and goes around the side of and ridge an then goes down the point of the ridge in and eastward direction where it enters Grassy Hollow. It then ascends the southern slope of a high hill and then turns northward up the side of a steep ridge. After going around the eastern face of that ridge it proceeds back to the point of beginning at Devils Well. During the field investigations Price and Coleman were accompanied by Martha Ruhe, Noel Orchard, Randy Ross, and Greg Effrig, the latter representing Pioneer Forest.
