An outbreak report of the two autochthonous cases of airport malaria in Belgium in 2020

Malaria is a protozoan disease caused by the Plasmodium parasite and transmitted by the bite of an infectious Anopheles mosquito. In Belgium, malaria is a travel-associated infection. This study describes the whole genome sequencing of two Plasmodium falciparum strains, that were reported in the context of the outbreak investigation of two fatal cases of autochthonous P. falciparum malaria that occurred in the vicinity of the international airport Brussels (Belgium).
