In its city code, San Antonio recognizes the vital importance of preservation. By ordinance, the Historic Preservation Office maintains the city's unique cultural heritage by preserving buildings, monuments, missions, acequias, and the San Antonio River. By setting aside historically valuable buildings, landmarks and areas by specific historic designation, the city actively participates in the preservation of cultural and neighborhood identity.
