Experimental setup and samples.

Information on the types of samples used for the different experimental protocols. For human samples (P1–P5), clinical characteristics are given. All patients were in permanent atrial fibrillation at the time of tissue harvesting during open heart procedures (AVR = Aortic Valve Replacement; CABG = Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting). All sample pairs (left and right atrium) were preserved under standardized, pairwise identical conditions as described in the text.#The CHADS2 is a clinically used score that summarises comorbidities often found in atrial fibrillation patients.It adds one point each for heart failure, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, age >75 years, and two points for a prior stroke.
