Eurobarometer 8 (Oct-Nov 1977)

The three major topics are:

1. Attitudes to the European Community and to European integration,

2. Work satisfaction and attitude to retirement,

3. Satisfaction and political attitudes.

Topics: 1. Attitudes to the EC: attitudes to membership of one´s own
country in the EC and to joining by Greece, Portugal and Spain;
attitude to direct election of the European Parliament.

2. Work satisfaction: judgement on one´s own job security; attitude to
sex-specific roles in work life and in politics; work satisfaction
(scale); attitude to reduction in working hours instead of wage
increase; attitude to employment after reaching the age limit and
reasons for an intent to remain further employed; intent of early
retirement and preference for a transition time before retirement.

3. Satisfaction: general contentment with life and feeling of
happiness; expected changes in the quality of life; most important
political goals at national level; attitude to the environmental
protection movement, the women´s movement and the change of the social
system; satisfaction with the manner of functioning of democracy;
political interest; expected social tensions and judgement on the
danger of war.

4. Miscellaneous: helping by the man with housework; attitude to
emancipation of women; membership in clubs and citizen initiatives;
party preference, party ties and voting intent in the Federal
Parliament election; left-right orientation; opinion leadership.

The following questions were posed to unemployed: earlier occupation;
willingness to accept part-time employment and urgency of job search.

The following questions were posed to housewives: satisfaction with
occupation of housewife; helping in occupation of husband; reasons for
non-employment.

Demography: membership in clubs and citizens´ initiatives; party
preference; religiousness; age; sex; marital status; nationality;
religious denomination; school education; occupation; household income;
size of household; composition of household; head of household; city
size; state.
