Transcriptome sequencing of two species of craspedid choanoflagellates

Choanoflagellates play an important ecological role in microbial food webs and occupy a unique phylogenetic position as the closest unicellular relatives of animals. Along with their fascinating biology, choanoflagellates have proven to be a significant model organism for further expanding our knowledge of ecology and evolution. Multiple environmental studies suggest that the majority of choanoflagellate diversity remains to be described. Thus, it is critical to increase the number of studied choanoflagellate species. Here, we sequence the transcriptomes of two novel craspedid (non-loricate) choanoflagellates. The generation of their transcriptomes will contribute to inform aspects of the evolution, ecology and broad biology of choanoflagellates.
