This paper-based collection was compiled by Alleyn Best in the course of his research into the histories of the Liquor Trades Union and the Tobacco Workers' Union, and into the biography of Jim Coull. Coull was the long-term Secretary of the LTU and Alleyn has written on him for the Australian Dictionary of Biography. He has also written on the Federated Municipal and Shire Council Employees Union (MEU).
The collection includes manuscript notes on the records of the Municipal Employees Union at the ANU; documents on Jim Coull, including his ASIO file obtained from Australian Archives; working files on the history of the Liquor Trades Union and Tobacco Workers' Union; original documents from LTU; photographs.
