Lactobacillus fermentum is a type of lactic acid bacterium that is heterofermentative and belongs to the Lactobacillaceae family in the Bacilli class of the Firmicutes phylum. LAB are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) and commonly used in producing fermented foods. L. fermentum is a potential probiotic organism due to its desirable probiotic properties, such as being non-pathogenic to humans, having increased resistance to the intestinal environment, and beneficial effects on the human immune system. The MehediL1 strain of L. fermentum was discovered in Bangladesh.
