BAT019 - Batta - The North Wind and the Sun

This dataset contains a version of the folktale 'The North Wind and the Sun', translated into Batta by Hans Ferson Sawoy (born 1978), a native speaker of Batta. The session was recorded on 18 December 2019, in Yenenas village (Batanta island, Raja Ampat regency, Southwest Papua province, Indonesia). As well as the raw recording, which is split over two files (BAT019-01 and BAT019-02), the recording is divided up by the different episodes that occur in the folktale. This dataset relates to the British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship 'Synchronic and diachronic investigations in Raja Ampat-South Halmahera, a little-known subbranch of Austronesian' (PF19\100004); additional fieldwork funds were provided by a Moray Endowment Grant from the University of Edinburgh.
