Compared to tropical corals, much less is known about deep-sea coral biology and ecology. This study characterizes the bacterial community associated with a deep-sea coral, Lophelia pertusa. Samples of L. pertusa were collected from three sites in the Gulf of Mexico and one site in the Western Atlantic Ocean. DNA was extracted from the coral samples and pyrosequenced using Roche 454 with titanium chemistry and V4-V5 primers targeting the 16S rRNA genes of the coral-associated bacterial community.
