The article proposes a reading of selected passages from the Aeneid (III, 506-531) in which Virgil describes the crossing of the Otranto Channel, offering us the possibility of reconstructing the ways and times of ancient navigation. In addition to the nautical theme, the allegorical aspects of the work are developed, with particular attention to the figure of Aeneas/Octavian and his initial landing in Italy.
