A dataset of Xin’an Physicians (358–1949)

Xin’an Medicine originated in the ancient Huizhou region along the Xin’an River Basin (including Shexian, Jixi, Xiuning, Qimen, Yixian and Wuyuan). Rooted in unique regional culture and enriched by extensive medical practice, it has developed into an independent school of traditional Chinese medicine. According to historical records, Xin’an Medicine emerged in the Jin and Tang dynasties, took shape in the Song and Yuan dynasties, reached its peak in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and continues to thrive today. It plays an important role in the history of Chinese medicine. Thanks to Xin’an medicine, many doctors and classic works have emerged, which have had a profound impact on the development of traditional Chinese medicine in later generations. This study focuses on Xin'an physicians active from 358 to 1949, drew upon entries in Chinese medical dictionaries and historical literature, and referred to relevant literature books and records, systematically collecting and digitizing. Based on biographical research, the academic thoughts and clinical experience characteristics of these physicians were analyzed and summarized. The resulting dataset is provided in both Excel and JSON format for ease of use and contains 1,028 physician records across 13 fields and 252 documented interpersonal relationships among the physicians. In addition, the study also effectively guaranteed the quality of the dataset by selecting authoritative data sources, manual data extraction, multiple rounds of verification, and the establishment of unified standards. This dataset aims to systematically compile and preserve historical records related to Xin’an physicians. Based on systematic data collation, it provides a valuable resource for researchers and Chinese medicine enthusiasts to consult and study Xin’an Medicine, and is of great significance for inheriting and developing Xin’an Medicine.
