A Formal Model of Weighted Practical Closure: Agency, Suspension, and the Timing of Commitment

Abstract This paper develops a formal account of practical closure under conditions of epistemic instability and opportunity irreversibility. The proposed framework treats suspension not as a mere absence of action but as a normatively admissible exercise of agency. Practical commitment is modeled as the result of a dynamic balance between two competing forces: epistemic pressure, arising from the expected instability of evaluative judgments, and opportunity irreversibility, arising from the irreversible loss of practical possibilities over time. Unlike standard theories of practical rationality that emphasize either correctness of judgment or consequences alone, the present model focuses on the timing of commitment. A weighted closure function is introduced and justified through a representation theorem grounded in measurement theory. The framework is further extended to multi-action environments by means of a practical selection theorem. Under appropriate monotonicity conditions, a closure threshold theorem establishes the existence and uniqueness of a critical time at which rational suspension gives way to rational commitment. The resulting account provides a unified structure for understanding agency, practical suspension, and decisiveness under uncertainty while connecting philosophical discussions of intention, suspension of judgment, and irreversibility with formal approaches found in decision theory and optimal stopping.
