This study was performed to unravel the potential role of plant – bacteria partnerships in bioremediation processes, aiming to develop a robust system for the remediation of soils and groundwater contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and , moreover, to optimize the sustainable production of useful biomass. For that reason, hybrid poplars [Populus deltoides x (trichocarpa x deltoides) cv Grimminge] were planted as a means to contain and remediate a diesel plume at a contaminated industrial site in Belgium. Based on the results, the strains with the highest degradation rates along with the ability to produce various plant growth promoting compounds have been selected for sequencing.
