Swallow and martin roosts detected by a weather radar in Manaus, AM (Brazil) from 2014 to 2015

This repository contains materials that support the paper "From spurious interference to biological signal: repurposing weather radars to monitor and study the Amazonian avifauna" published on Ecology and Evolution (vol 15, issue 8) with authors Maria C. T. D. Belotti, Victória de Souze Wojahn, Carlos Augusto Morales Rodriguez, and Kyle G. Horton. The zip file main_dataset contains georeferenced bounding boxes drawn around swallow and martin roosts dispersals detected by an operational weather radar in Manaus, AM (3°8′56.0′′ S, 59°59′29.1′′ W) from 2014 to 2015. The two R scripts analysis.R and aux_func.R can be used to reproduce the analysis and figures in the paper, using the shapefile provided in this repository. The scripts contained in radar_processing.zip were developed to download, render, georeference and estimate the size of each roost. These are the scripts that define our radar processing methodology. They rely on pyart 2.01 to open volumetric data files using the GAMIC standard (function pyart.aux_io.read_gamic).
