VPRS 19746 Correspondence Files, Adoptions (Born Interstate and Adopted in Victoria)

This series contains correspondence received by the Prothonotary of the Supreme Court of Victoria from other state authorities regarding adoption orders of children adopted into Victoria. This correspondence was then forwarded to the Office of the Government Statist and Actuary (VA 989), and from 1983 the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (VA 983). The Adoption of Children Amending Act 1942 authorised the transmission of copies of adoption orders made in Victoria concerning children born in other States or Territories. Under reciprocal agreements entered into between States and Territories of the Commonwealth, the Supreme Court (through the Prothonotary) was responsible for sending copies of adoption orders of children born outside Victoria to the respective state agencies responsible for administration of adoptions. The correspondence file generally includes an acknowledgement of the receipt of the adoption order but can also include a copy of the certified or uncertified adoption order. The original adoption orders can be found in the series attributed to the court that granted the order, for example VPRS 11735 County Court Adoption Case Files, Melbourne.
