Fungi represent a understudied component of the human gut microbiome, in part due to the lack of global-scale datasets and methodological biases. Here, we introduce a tailored pipeline to correct key analytical artifacts.
Applying this pipeline to global internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing data, we assembled the Human Gut Mycobiome Atlas, comprising 46,400 samples and 3.1 billion microfungal sequences from diverse populations worldwide covering four continents, 26 countries, and 66 regions.
Together, this study provides a useful tool and global reference resource for advancing research into the ecology and health implications of the human gut mycobiome.
