The aim of the studyis to analyze how first-year linguistics students conceptualize mathematics in their educational experience at the initialstage of their studies, aswell as to identify the structure of mathematics awareness as a multidimensional epistemic constructin the context of the formation of the professional identity of future linguists. The empirical basis of the study was data from a questionnaire(an online survey in Google form of 19 questions)and 19 tests in an e-learning course for 171 (n=163after clearing data from incomplete records)first-year Linguistics students. The Google questionnaire included open-ended and choice-of-answer questions, including questions about attitudes to mathematics as a tool for linguistic research, mathematics as a formalized language potentially interesting to linguists, and mathematics as a simulator of critical thinking. Data were collected in two cohorts: September 2-3, 2024 (n=105) and November 5, 2025 (n=58). The gender composition of the sample reflects the typical structure of linguistic educational programs (87% of women). The share of international studentsis 23%. These characteristics ensure the ecological validity of the results obtained for the context of modern linguistic education.Ethics:i nformedconsent, anonymity, volunteerism.
