Marine biofilm microbial communities on coastal waters

This study compared the relative effect of marine environments on the composition of biofilm microbial communities developed over different surfaces.Biofilms grown over plastic (PVC) were used as inert surfaces to compare to the surrounding microbial communities in the water column. Furthermore, biofilms over PVC were compared to the selected communities developed over antifouling biocide-containing surfaces.These samples were analysed from three coastal waters (PVC was sampled additionally in a fourth site) and used to explore marine colonization of the plastisphere, as well as to detect microbial selection according to surface and site.
