Iron removal from sub-surface drinking water sources

The most common problem limiting the use of subsurface groundwater in Uttarakhand is its high iron content. The prevalence of Iron in subsurface groundwater has led to great concern regarding drinking water. The cost-effective and eco-friendly newer biotechnological processes, viz., bioremediation and biobeneficiation through microbial metal reabsorption, have been widely accepted. Microbes can uptake metal ions actively (bioaccumulation) and/or passively (biosorption) quite effectively for the removal of metal ions from contaminated solutions in a low-cost and environmentally friendly manner.
