This project aims to study the gas sensing mechanisms of pure and cerium oxide nanoparticle-loaded nanowire semiconducting metal oxide WO3 using the NAP-XPS technique under operando conditions. To thoroughly understand the mechanism of gas detection, it is crucial to characterize the surface composition and the material electronic structure during the exposure of the material to O2, and then during the exposure to other gases such as CO and ethanol. Furthermore, these measurements will enable understanding the role of cerium oxide particles supported on semiconducting metal oxides in the increase in response towards the target gases.
