Assessment of genetic changes and neurovirulence of shed Sabin and novel type 2 oral polio vaccine viruses

Novel oral poliovirus vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) strains are being developed to reduce the rare risks of disease associated with the genetic instability of the Sabin vaccine strains. Healthy adults were enrolled in phase 1 and phase 2 clinical studies to assess safety, immunogenicity, shedding. A next-generation sequencing pipeline was developed and used to evaluate the genetic profile of type-2 poliovirus shed in stool of participants administered novel type-2 oral poliovirus vaccine candidates.
