The low-carb diet, characterized by restricted carbohydrate intake, has gained significant attention as a potential intervention for diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes. Substantial evidence indicates that this dietary approach can markedly improve glycemic control, enhance insulin sensitivity, and demonstrate sustained benefits in both blood glucose regulation and weight management over the long term. Additionally, it may reduce dependence on glucose-lowering medications. This review comprehensively summarizes the application of low-carb diets in diabetes treatment. Studies indicate that low-carb diets effectively lower blood glucose levels, reduce body weight, and decrease medication requirements in type 2 diabetes patients, with emerging reports of utility in type 1 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and other specialized forms of diabetes. Overall, low-carb diets show promise as a viable strategy for diabetes management; however, broader applicability and long-term effects warrant further investigation through more extensive studies with larger sample sizes.
