Lecanicillum species and close related Cordycipitaceae (Sordariomycetes, Ascomycota) comprises a wide and diverse polyphyletic species distributed in multiple ecosystems. Atypical Coccidioides sp. isolates recovered from suspected coccidioidomycosis cases were and submitted to a detailed molecular and morphological identification. Molecular and morphological diagnostic analyses revealed that those strains belonged to Cordycipitaceae fungi, herein named L. americana sp. nov. The genomes of this species were sequenced, fully annotated and compared to close relative Cordycipitaceae fungi. revealing unique evolutionary traits of the newly discovered fungal species and suggest both clinical and biotechnology perspectives.
