The Development of workforce and workplaces in Germany between 1875 and 1980

In the context of the focal point „Industrial societies in change“ the Volkswagen foundation promoted the project “Comparative Analysis of Social Structure with mass data (VASMA)” from 1979 to 1984. The Vasma-Project was managed by Prof. Dr. Walter Müller, University of Mannheim. The VASMA-Project adressed the long-term change of the sructural labour force participation in Germany under consideration of the structural change of female labour force during the past 100 years. Topics of interest are: - The growth and structural change of the employment system. - The change of business organisation - The structural change of female labour force The data collection of this study is based on the following subproject of the VASMA-Project: - “Growth and structural change of employment systems”. - “Social modernisation and business organisation”. The data-tables of this study draw on published research-results of the VASMA-Projects. These Publications are listet under ‘Veröffentlichungen’ (=Publications). Im Rahmen ihres Schwerpunktes „Industriegesellschaften im Wandel“ hat die Stiftung Volkswagenwerk von 1979 bis 1984 das Projekt „Vergleichende Analysen der Sozialstruktur mit Massendaten (VASMA)“ gefördert. Das VASMA-Projekt stand unter der Leitung von Prof. Walter Müller, Universität Mannheim. Das VASMA-Projekt befasste sich schwerpunktmässig mit dem langfristigen Wandel der Erwerbsstruktur in Deutschland unter Einschluss des Strukturwandels der Frauenarbeit in den zurückliegenden 100 Jahren. Drei Fragestellungen standen hierbei im Vordergrund: - Das Wachstum und der Strukturwandel des Beschäftigungssystems, - die Änderungen der Betriebsstruktur, - der Strukturwandel der Frauenarbeit. Die vorliegende Datensammlung beruht auf Studien, die als Teilprojekte im Rahmen des VASMA-Projektes erstellt wurden. - Teilprojekt: „Wachstum und Strukturwandel des Beschäftigungssystems“: Es werden die längerfristigen Umschichtungen des Beschäftigungssystem in Deutschland analysiert. - Teilprojekt: „Gesellschaftliche Modernisierung und Betriebsstruktur“: Die Analyse der Entwicklung der Arbeitsstätten in Deutschland von 1875 bis 1980 erfolgte in zwei Schritten: zunächst anhand der Entwicklung der Betriebsgrößen und Unternehmensformen, anschließend mit Hilfe einer flächendeckenden Analyse sämtlicher erwerbswirtschaftlicher Organisationen. Die Datentabelle der vorliegenden Datensammlung stützen sich auf publizierte Forschungsergebnisse ausgewählter Publikationen des VASMA-Projektes.
