How Do Relational Networks Facilitate Business Model Innovation Through Knowledge Activities?

Addressing the current research gap on how relational networks influence business model innovation through knowledge activities, this study constructs a moderated mediation model based on the strong and weak ties theory and the SECI knowledge creation spiral theory. It examines the mechanisms through which strong and weak ties affect business model innovation via knowledge sharing, as well as the moderating role of knowledge integration in this process. Empirical data from 307 Chinese start-ups reveal that strong and weak ties not only directly promote business model innovation but also indirectly influence innovation through the mediating effect of knowledge sharing. Furthermore, knowledge integration positively moderates the relationship between strong ties and knowledge sharing, as well as between weak ties and business model innovation. This study enriches research on the antecedents of business model innovation and provides theoretical and practical insights for start-ups to effectively leverage relational networks and for policymakers to design innovation support policies.
