资源简介:
The aim of this paper is to investigate whether citizens meaningfully distinguish between profiles of politicians, based on the conceptions of democracy that the ministers embody. While previous research has shown that citizens place importance to socio-demographic factors and political beliefs influence voters' candidate preferences, little attention has been paid to the specific representational paradigms preferred by voters. Using a conjoint experiment conducted across 15 Western and Eastern European countries, the study examines respondents' preferences for candidates embodying six paradigms, which are derived from the literature. The findings reveal that citizens value candidates who represent the will of the people and do not belong to the party, at least compared to those profiles that are affiliated to political parties and are accountable to the parliament. Moreover, the study demonstrates that trustful citizens prioritize candidates embodying a responsible party model paradigm more than distrustful citizens, and those with populist attitudes favour candidates representing an instructed delegate and to a lesser extent technocratic paradigm.
