Helotiales sp. T6G9 was isolated from the hair roots of a juvenile Woollsia pungens plant in August, 2000. The plant was growing in shallow, sandy soil on a rock ledge in a mixed dry sclerophyll forest at Murphy’s Glen, Blue Mountains National Park, NSW, Australia. In mycorrhizal resynthesis experiments the species forms typical ericoid mycorrhizal (ERM) coils in the roots of ericaceous plants. Along with Cairneyella variabilis, this species of ericoid mycorrhizal fungus, is probably the most extensively studied in the southern hemisphere. Its nitrogen, carbon and phosphorus metabolism along with its ecology have been the subject of numerous studies.
