Three indices of apoptosis were measured in the SNC, activated caspase-3 immunolabeling, TUNEL labeling, and pyknotic morphology. All three indications were significantly elevated following MPTP intoxication. However, MPTP-induced apoptosis was significantly reduced ipsilateral to viral vector delivery of PGRN by ND-602, while remaining unchanged in the contralateral hemisphere. Each number represents the mean (±S.E.M., n = 5–9) number of positive cells counted across 4 coronal sections through the SNC.
