Upwellingintheworld'sstrongestcurrent,theAntarcticCircumpolarCurrent,isthoughtto bedrivenbywindstress,surfacebuoyancyflux,andmixinggeneratedfromtheinteractionbetweenbottomcurrentsandroughtopography.However,theimpactoflocalizedinjectionofheatbyhydrothermalvents wheretheAntarcticCircumpolarCurrentinteractswithmid-oceanridgesremainspoorlyunderstood. Hereacircumpolarcompilationofheliumandphysicalmeasurementsareusedtoshowthatwhilegeothermalheatistransferredtotheoceanoverabroadareabyconduction,heattransferbyconvection dominatesnearhydrothermalvents.Buoyanthydrothermalplumesdecreasestratificationabovethevent sourceandincreasestratificationtothesouth,alteringthelocalverticaldiffusivityanddiapycnalupwellingwithin500moftheseafloorbyanorderofmagnitude.Boththeheliumtracerandstratificationsignals inducedbyhydrothermalinputareadvectedbytheflowandinfluencepropertiesdownstream.
