资源简介:

3D scan of the Youndegin meteorite. With 110 x 65 cm and 909 kg, this iron meteorite is the largest and heaviest specimen of the meteorite collection. It is the second-largest known fragment of this meteorite (i.e., the largest one is 2628 kg), found in 1892 east of the settlement of York, a small town about 80 km East of Perth in Western Australia. It is on display in the Meteorite Hall since October 21th, 1896.

The meteorite shows a brown patina, typical of some iron meteorites, as a
result of alteration on Earth for thousands of years before it was
recovered. Impressive large regmaglypts are visible at the surface of the
meteorite. These indentations or pits formed by ablation as the
meteorite passes through the Earth’s atmosphere, due to the erosive
action of turbulent compressed and heated air masses. They were then
modified by corrosion, some of them now penetrating the specimen as
irregular holes. When seen from a certain perspective a part of the meteorite resembles a person seen in profile.
