AI tool classification snapshot, September 2026

A function-based classification of AI tools with counts, observed on 26 September 2026. 11,959 active AI tools are grouped into 18 categories and 165 subcategories. The record contains the classification tree with tool counts per node, a profile of each category (AI-native versus AI-enabled products), the distribution of stated training policies per category and in total, and 200 example tools with their category, AI type, risk level and data-sovereignty rating. The examples exclude the most widely used AI tools and tools built for abusive purposes. Of 8,811 tools with a known training policy, 73.3% state no policy on training with customer inputs, 18.2% state they do not train on inputs, and 6.5% train on inputs by default.
