This chart presents the new order index 12-month backward moving average. The index measures the share of purchasing managers in the state reporting increasing or steady orders received for their manufacturing products. A value above 50 suggests an expansion in the manufacturing sector. The new orders index is compiled by Dr. Ernest Goss with the Heider College of Business at Creighton University. This is a component of the Iowa Leading Indicators Index which is designed to forecast the future direction of economic activity in the state of Iowa.
