AmeriFlux AR-Cel CELPA Mar Chiquita BA

This is the AmeriFlux version of the carbon flux data for the site AR-Cel CELPA Mar Chiquita BA. Site Description - The site is located at a mid-latitude South Atlantic pristine salt marsh. It occupies 43 km2 of an extended marginal flat surrounding a 25 km long brackish lagoon connected with the Argentine Sea through an inlet channel. The small tide amplitude prevents extensive waterlogging with salt water. Unlike other Northern Hemisphere salt marshes regularly flooded by daily tides, Mar Chiquita soaks throughout the winter with approximately a 10 cm freshwater layer coming from rains, and during summer high temperatures and high evapotranspiration dry the soil, producing a thin salt crust on the surface. Another significant difference is that the canopy persists throughout the year without dying out, due to the lack of snowfall or below-freezing winter temperatures.
